NXdrive web-based file manager is a browser –based file management system that is similar to window file explorer. It shows when you log into your NXdrive account from an Internet browser, e.g., IE, Firefox, chrome, etc. The file manager includes file or folder operating tools under the NXdrive logo, hierarchical tree structure of your files, and file listing zone. The file or folder operating tools consists of a set of clickable icons for file operations. The hierarchical tree structure has the NXdrive file directory, Recycle, Favorites, Recent Places, and Share Links. The file listing zone lists the data documents by Name, Location, Modification date, Type, and Size.

There are several ways to manage your data documents that include web browser and apps. After you have logged into your account from a web browser, you will see a web-based NXdriver file manager. The NXdrive file manager is similar to window file explorer that provides the functions to manipulate your data files. These functions include Create, Download, Upload, Cut, Copy, Duplicate, Edit, Rename, Preview, Delete, Shred, Restore, Empty Trash, List View, Grid View, Link, Unlink, Favorite, Sort, and Search. In addition, a tree-based folder and a file hierarchical structure allow you effectively manage the data files. In the page of File Manager, the user icon can lead you to “Setting”, “Profile”, “Logout” pages.

In the file manager, you can create a New Folder or a Text file by clicking on the “Create” button.

A folder or file is selected by clicking the square at the left side of the file name. Once the folder or file is selected, the file is highlighted by blue color. Folders or files are selected if you click on the squares of multiple files in a sequence. You can select all by checking on the square near the “Name”. If the square is check, the next click on it is to release the selection of the folder (s) or file (s).

In the file manager, you can see “NXdrive”, “Recycle”, “Favorite”, “Recent places”, and Share links”. All these are the main folders. You can navigate among these or any other subfolder by clicking on the folder name. The file manager lists the folders and files with the information of “Name”, “Location”, “Modification date”, “Type”, and “Size”. In addition, folders and file can be sorted by any these categories.

For uploading any data files, you need to click on the “Upload” button from the file manager. A file Upload window will pop out and the Upload window can be displayed in normal size or full screen. A “Switch to full screen” button allows you to switch the window from normal size to full size, and vice versa for “Switch to normal size” button. Clicking on “Add files” will enable you to select file(s) from your local computer. From the “File Upload” window, you can select one or more documents for uploading in one-time. For each document, the Upload window shows the file name, data transmitting, security processing, and the final result. If it is a picture, it could show you the picture on the left. For multiple files, you can scroll down to the status of all documents. NXdrive may limit the maximal number of documents for uploading in one time. The limitation may come from the browser or your service plan. After you upload all documents, you can click on “Close” button to close the Upload window.

Uploading a file to NXdrive is a complicate process that includes data transmission and security processing. The security processing relies on the current system status and error may happen. However, don’t worry on it. You can just resubmit your files that errors occurred until it shows “Success”. You can double check the status by exploring the file in the NXdrive file manager folder. The file will show up in your NXdrive file system if the upload is successful.

From the NXdrive file manager, you can download one or more documents in one time. To select a file, please check on the square on the left of the file name. For a selected file, you can download it by clicking on the “Download” button and then save it to the place you like in your computer. If you select multiple files, you can still click “Download” button to download them. As for multiple file download, we deliver you a compressed file that contains all the documents that you selected. Once you save it to your machine, you need to uncompress them using uncompressed software, such as RAR.

After you have logged into your account, we will see a number of folders and file names of your data documents. For the pictures you have uploaded before this login, you may see some photo icons, instead of real pictures. This is because we separate your file name and the content of the real data for security purpose. The picture is loaded only when you need it by clicking on “Download” or “Preview”. The loading process of a file includes a number of security operations and it takes a moment, depending on the file size.

From the NXdrive file manager, you can delete one or more documents in one time. To select a file, please check on the square on the left of the file name. For a selected file, you can delete it by clicking on the “Trash” button. A “Delete File(s)” window pops out to confirm your deletion operation. In addition, you can check the option “Check here if you want to permanently delete the selected files” to purse the documents. Once you purse the file, you aren't be able recover them. The deleted file(s) are moved to “Recycle” trash bin. If you click on the “Recycle” trash bin, you can see all your documents that you deleted.

When you click on the “Recycle” trash bin, you can see “Shred” and “Empty Trash” icons. Both the spaces of the shredded and emptied data documents will be released for users. In other words, the user useable storage space will be increased by the same amount for these two operations if the same data documents are operated on. On the other hand, they apply different strategies on clearing the data documents. “Shred” means delete the selected data documents immediately and permanently. These data documents will be unable to get back. “Empty trash” will schedule the data documents in the “Recycle” trash bin to be deleted gracefully by the system. These data documents may be able to find it a grace period such as 30 days. However, recovery of the emptied data documents has no guarantee. After the grace period, all the data will be permanently cleared. These two strategies are specially designed to protect the user data availability in an on-demand or graceful fashion.

In the file manager, “Grid view” is a tool that graphically displays the images/pictures in that folder. As graphical display, it filters out other data documents other than images/pictures and to show the images/pictures by photos.

All the data folders and files in the “Recycle” trash bin can be recovered. Your data documents that are emptied from “Recycle” trash bin may be able to be recovered during the grace period. All the permanently deleted data documents are unable to be recovered.

NXdrive provides file name search. In the File Manager, you can input any three or more letters in the search bar to search and the searching result will be shown up subsequently. Searching from data document is very computationally expensive and NXdrive could not support it at this moment.

Clicking on “Recycle” folder allows you to see the document in the trash bin. You can select any of them and click on “Recover” button to recover the data file(s) into the original place.

If you want to share a file with other(s), you should first select the file and then click the “Link” icon. A “Send link(s)” window will pop out and this window allows you to send the share link to anyone that you have the email address. After filling out the destination address (s), you can send the sharing message by clicking on the “Send” icon in the “Send link (s)” window. The receiver can view the shared file by clicking on the sharing link that you have emailed.

You can select multiple folders or files and then click the “Link” icon. A “Send link(s)” window will pop out which contains multiple sharing links. Clicking on the “Send” icon is to send the sharing links to your specified destinations.

NXdrive provides state-of-art security and privacy protection. It is different than the file-based data storage that you are normally using to save data documents in the laptop, smartphone, cloud, or other service providers. File-based data storage stores a data document as a whole in the system which paves many ways for adversarial data breaches or other security problems. It likes you put a treasure in one single box (e.g., a safe deposit box), which is similar to save a data document in a computer. Your treasure will be lost if the box has been taken by others as if your data document in a device is breached by an adversary. Therefore, the current commonly used file-based data storage is not safe at all. The detail of the problem is described in the problem page and a number of records of data breach can be found at World's Biggest Data Breaches & Hacks.
NXdrive is the first fragment-based data storage approach that a document becomes a number of fragments and these fragments look like uncorrelated on each other. It likes a treasure that is magically transferred into a number of identical balls. NXdrive randomly saves these fragments into a number of devices as if the treasure balls are randomly put into a number of boxes where each box has a number of identical balls. The more balls you have in boxes, the higher security you have achieved. Therefore, the adversary is unable to steal your data documents from one or certain storage device as these fragments look like identical. In other words, fragments render very high combination complexity for data protection. On the other hand, you can easily get the treasure back from a number of balls where you are the only one who know the identical treasure balls and can magically recover the original treasure back from some of the balls.
Moreover, you can put these boxes in different secure places, resulting in spatial difficulty. In addition, NXdrive integrates cryptographic, information coding, and many innovative security strategies as a whole to protect your data from being compromised. Furthermore, NXdrive hides your data privacy as if the identical balls disclose nothing about the appearance of your treasure. Due to above reasons, NXdrives achieve robust security and privacy protection, stronger than generally used encryption and file-based data storage.

NXdrive is designed for individuals, families, small businesses, originations, enterprises, healthcare, financials, banks, industry, sales, governments, DoD, and others who have sensitive and confidential data. The data could be office documents, pdfs, images, or others. Suppose you have sensitive photos, NXdrive is the best to protect it.

Registration to NXdrive is simple and easy. On the registration form, you would like to provide your account name and email to the system. You will receive an email message to verify your email address and click on the link in this email to activate your account.

Setting up a strong and unused password is critical to for you to protect your data from being accessed by an adversary. On the other hand, you should carefully protect the email address associated with your account and the devices that you use NXdrive applications.

There are two key steps for you to determine an NXdrive plan to meet your data protection goal. The first thing for selecting a plan is to select a service model. NXdrive has three service models:

  • Basic Secure Mode: It is suggested for sensitive data such as personal data and pictures
  • Enhanced Secure Mode: Enhanced secure mode is good for storing your confidential data and pictures
  • Extremely Secure Mode: Top secret data is suggested for Extremely Secure Mode which achieves very high confidentiality, reliability, and other desirable security features

Upon the selection of the service mode, you need to check the storage size and bandwidth per month that you want. Basic secure mode is free and has a limited storage size. Different plans are provided for Enhanced secure mode and Extremely secure mode for different storage spaces. In general, we suggest you choose Enhanced Security Mode for your initial services and you can change the plan for your needs in the future.

In the first time when you enroll into a paid service (e.g., Enhanced Secure Mode or Extremely Secure Mode), NXdrive securely deliver your credit card information to AuthrorizeNet which is a third party billing company. NXdrive will not save your credit card information. Thereafter, we request your payment information by sending the charge information to AuthrorizeNet for a payment process. We retrieve the processing results for accounting purpose.

You can choose monthly payment or yearly payment. If you select to pay your service month by month, you will be charged per month, according to the standard unit price every month. If you choose to pay year by year, then you are charged for the whole year service in the same day every year. A discounted price may be offered to year by year payment plan. Whichever the payment plan, all the charges are not refundable. On the other hand, the payment credits could be transferable among different service plans.

You are able to upgrade your services anytime, depending on if you need more spaces or stronger data protection. Downgrading service is also allowable. However, you should make sure that your utilized data storage space is less the space of the service plan that you are going to select. In order to meet the space requirement, you can release your data space by emptying trash or permanently deleting certain amount of data that you don’t need anymore, if your current used space is more than the plan you want to choose.

You are able to change your service plan when you have logged into your account. Clicking on “Setting” brings you to “Service Plan” page. Then you can click on “My service plan” to change your service plan.

You are able to cancel your account after you have logged into your account. Before you do it, please make sure you have retrieved your data from NXdrive and permanently delete them from NXdrive. A Cancel button will appear in the “Settings” page under My Service Plan. After the deletion, you are also unable to access your account.

You are able to reactive your NXdrive account by a registration process similar to registration of a new account. Your previous data documents will be not there and we treat you as a new user in terms of data storage functions.

If you click on “LOGIN” on the NXdrive landing page, you will see “Reset my password” and you can click on it to recover your password.

When you login, you can click “Settings” which leads you to “Account” page. You can change the password by Click on “Change Password”.

NXdrive (NeXt Drive) is a novel secure data backup system, alternatively a fragment-based data storage system. All personal data files are first securely transferred into a number fragments and these fragments are randomly distributed into a set of data storage devices. Fragment discloses nothing on your data files and correspondingly they protect your data confidentiality and privacy, achieving much better security than file-based or encryption-based data storage system.

A fragment is generated from a data document after various security and redundancy processes. It looks like a stream of randomly created symbols, having no information of your data files. It is different than a stream of original data content. Your data file content is unable to be decrypted form any fragment which is different than a ciphertext.

No. From a fragment, we cannot see any data content. The compromise of a fragment (e.g., decryption of a fragment) also discloses nothing on the data content.

Yes. NXdrive protects your data confidentiality from backdoor. Suppose the NSA put the backdoor in the encryption and it can bypass the encryption and get back to the original fragment before encryption. The recovered fragment is still randomly symbols that disclose nothing about the original user data. NXdrives imposes another layer of protection is not included in the current encryption standards. The compromise of a fragment is unable to reveal the fragment correlations. The original data content can be only recovered by finding the additional fragments from massive other fragments. It also needs to be accomplished additional protection on creating these fragments. Such a process is very complexity and we did see any successful attempts.

A fragment is transferred from a data document but it has removed the privacy information. From a fragment only, we cannot know: (i) who is the data owner, (ii) what are the other fragments it is associated, (iii) what is the user information inside, and (iv) other privacy information.

Both a fragment and a piece of encrypted data could be random symbols. However, they are differences. By a security key, the encrypted data is ciphertext that is generated using an encryption algorithm. Currently, there are a number of approaches to decrypt the ciphertext by fast computers. Differently, NXdrive generates a number of fragments for a given data document. Again, a fragment or a compromised fragment discloses nothing on the original data content by any decryption. The correlations of the fragments are not indicated in the fragments themselves and therefore it prevents the adversary to find other fragments from the storage devices. Therefore, a fragment gives no data information while the encrypted data could disclose the data content after decryption.

The fragment complexity is the computational complexity to comprise a fragment.

The fragment combination complexity is the number of ways to select a certain number of fragments that are belong to a given data document. Suppose NXdrive has 1000 fragments, and three of them give the possibility to recover the original data file. The combination complexity will be a big number of 166167000. On the other hand, NXdrive has a very large number of fragments and the combination complexity is massive. It is noted combination is only one aspect of the security fence to protect your data confidentiality and privacy.

Fragments are distributed in a number of storage devices. The fragment spatial complexity is the hacking activities needed for an adversary to compromises a set of fragments from a set of storage devices. Compromising a device may be easy. However, concurrently compromising a number of NXdrive devices challenges the adversary.

In the landing page, we see the Fragment Security Complexity, which is estimated as the increase in security compared to the encryption-only storage. It increases since more fragments are stored into the NXdriver either by you or other. The increase of the fragment again increases the security of the data protection. A small increase of fragment may significantly increase the fragment combination complexity, achieving much higher security.

Fragment complexity, fragment combination complexity, and fragment spatial complexity are all protected the data security. In addition, multi-layer encryption, deep coding, and information matrix are also the technologies to protect the user data confidentiality and privacy.

The content of the data document can be viewed only by (i) first logging into your account, (ii) then clicking on download or preview from your account user interface to retrieve the data content. Therefore, keeping your password secure is very important for your data confidentiality. Without logging into your account and retrieving the data, your data content is a number of unrecognized fragments in the NXdrive cloud, randomly distributed in a number of storage machines. Nobody can see your data content just from these storage machines.

NXdrive iPhone App (“app” for simplicity) allows you to access and manage your documents, photo, images, and other files in the NXdrive account from your iPhone devices. It synchronizes to your NXdrive web account and from the App installed in your iPhone devices you can upload pictures and videos, and conduct many other operations to manage your files. It also provides unique security features that are different than other online data backup systems, and the main security features are:

  • Secure file backup: All the files in the NXdrive account and those uploaded from the iPhone are stored via the NXdrive fragment-based storage system which achieves much better security effectiveness, compared to the file or file-encryption storage. Any of your files is stored as junk-like fragments at multiple storage devices which protect your data confidentiality and privacy. NXdrive iPhone App applies the same security mode as the NXdrive account that you have registered, e.g., extremely secure mode.
  • Prevent data loss at iPhone: The photos or documents uploaded to the NXdrive account can be removed from the local iPhone if your iPhone allows you to do it. The app, for example, has a function of Delete Local Copy. You can take a picture while only save it to NXdrive account. It can prevent photo leakages due to iPhone loss, iPhone cyber viruses, or the third party who access your iPhone memory.
  • Secure file shares: The NXdrive iPhone App offers three kinds of file shares: Passcode by your own, Passcode by the system, or no Passcode, to provide different security features on file protections. Passcode by your own achieves the strict security while the passcode is not transmitted via an email. Only your authorized persons having your credentials can open the sharing file through the shared link.

All these NXdrive iPhone App security features make your photos and documents safe and accessible from your iPhone.

Yes if you don’t have an NXdrive account. Your account includes an email address and an associated password. If you already have one, you don’t need to register if you don’t want more than one NXdrive account. After the NXdrive iPhone App is installed in your iPhone, you should use your NXdrive account to login.

When you login, the app will retrieve your files and they are sorted by Name, Date, or Size. You can click or double click on Name, Date, or Size to have a sort of an ascending or descending order.

There are four file operations tabs:

  • New: New tab provides Upload, Folder, Camera, Video operations. Upload allows you to upload photos or other files from your local iPhone. Folder gives the way to create a new folder. Camera enables you to take a photo and upload it. Video is the function of taking a video and uploading it.
  • Recent: It is the tab for you to explore the recent operated files
  • Favorite: Favorite tab lists all your favorite folders or files.
  • Share: Share tab presents all folders or file that you have shared with friends.

Clicking on the icon on the most-right side of a file or folder, an operational panel pops out. This panel provides you the functions to download, rename, copy & paste, cut & paste, share, add to favorite, move to trash, and delete local copy. If the file is already in your favorite list, you can mark it as the normal again. Delete local copy is enabled only a local copy exists in your iPhone.

The download function is provided in the operational panel. You can also click on the file name to download the file. If the file is already downloaded in your iPhone, you can directly open it locally. You can also reload the file from your NXdrive account to have a fresh copy.

Click on the folder name to open it.

Click on Rename on the operational panel to input a new name as you like.

It has two steps. In the file operational panel, you click on the Copy and then a Paste icon will show up on the top of the iPhone screen. Then, you can navigate to the folder that you want to paste and click on the Paste icon to finish your operation.

It has two steps similar to Copy & Paste. In the file operational panel, you click on the Cut and then a Paste icon will show up on the top of the iPhone screen. Then, you can navigate to the folder that you want to paste and click on the Paste icon to move the file into the current folder.

Click on Share on the operational panel to start a sharing process. It shows three security options:

  • Share with a Passcode by your own: You can set up a passcode for the file you want to share. This passcode will NOT be transmitted with the sharing link on the email. You can provide the passcode to your sharing person by your own way, such a phone call or message. Passcode by your own excludes the security attack to explore your emails with sharing link to steal your data documents.
  • Share with a Passcode by system: In this case, the system will generate a passcode for you to protect the sharing file. This passcode will be included in the sharing email and send to the peer with the file sharing link. Passcode by system provides convenience for secure fie share while scarifying security.
  • Share without passcode protection: It is a way without passcode for the sharing. Anyone having the file sharing link can download the file.

After setting on the passcode, a sharing link will created for the sharing documents. An email will be created for you to send the sharing link to any person via an email.

Yes, you can share the file as many times as you like. All of them use the same sharing link and passcode if you have.

Yes, you can. You should first click on the Share tab and find the file. Clicking on the icon on the most-right of the file to see the operation panel, you will see Stop Share option and click on it to cannel your file sharing. The sharing link will be avoid and the file not accessible via the link. A new sharing link will be created if you want to share it again.

Yes, you can change it. Click on the Share tab and find the file. When you get the operation panel, you will see Reset Share Password and click on it. You can input your own passcode or generate a new passcode from the system. Suppose you have change the sharing passcode. For any future sharing operation, that passcode will be applied and the previous codes will be avoided.

When you download a file such as a photo, the file will be stored at your local iPhone. In the next time, you can directly review the file without reloading the file from your NXdrive account, saving your loading time. However, the local copy imposes serious security problems. At first, the virus could steal these local files and send them to adversary. Secondly, your data files may be endangered if your iPhone is physically lost or accessed by any other people. Delete Local Copy is the operation of permanently removing the local copy of the file from the memory or hard drive that prevents the above mentioned security problem.

Delete Local Copy provides you two benefits. The first is that it saves your iPhone space, especially for large photos and videos. The other benefit is security. Deleting the local copy prevents the cyber security attacks that are targeting for stealing data file from your iPhone. It may also prevent data leakages from your iPhone memory when you lose your iPhone, and authorize the third party to repair your iPhone.

NXdrive Android App (“app” for simplicity) allows you to access and manage your documents, photo, images, and other files in the NXdrive account from your Android devices (e.g., Android Phones or Tabs).
